Outdoor History Project

Main Content

Do you wish you could watch a video interview with Norman Clyde or other early High Sierra mountaineers? Do you enjoy sitting around, hearing stories about the "good old days" of rock climbing using pitons and hammers? What was it really like in Yosemite in the 60s?

There are so many great stories out there and I do not want to see them lost. The Outdoor History Project's goal is to collect these stories. The oral history video interviews will be historical documents that will be preserved and made accessible to future researchers and members of the public.

Oral Histories

Open to anyone who wishes to submit video stories and photos

The Outdoor History Project's mission is to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of climbers, mountaineers, backcountry skiers and adventurers so that future generations may hear directly from them and better understand their unique life styles and experiences. In addition we want to collect the stories from the people who were part of the outdoor industry; retailers, manufacturers, writers, photographers and salespeople.

Participate
Share your story. Simply sit down with a friend and video record a conversation about your outdoor experiences for 30 minutes or longer. Interview a outdoor focused person in your family or community. Collect historical documents and photographs. Our oral history interviews seek an in-depth account of personal experience and reflections, with sufficient time allowed to give their story the fullness they deserve. The content of these interviews is grounded in reflections on the past.

Oral History

Oral history refers both to a method of recording and preserving oral testimony and to the product of that process. It begins with an audio or video recording of a first person account made by an interviewer with an interviewee (also referred to as narrator), both of whom have the conscious intention of creating a permanent record to contribute to an understanding of the past. A verbal document, the oral history, results from this process and is preserved and made available in different forms to other users, researchers, and the public. A critical approach to the oral testimony and interpretations are necessary in the use of oral history.
